Tomato Allergies: Symptoms, Causes, and Link to Pollen Allergies

For some people, eating tomatoes can cause allergic reactions, ranging from mild symptoms like itching and hives to severe cases like anaphylaxis. While true tomato allergies are uncommon, they do happen. Verywell Health notes, “most reactions are linked to oral allergy syndrome (OAS), which occurs due to cross-reactivity with grass pollen allergens.” This means if you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may experience a similar reaction when consuming tomatoes.

Common Tomato Allergy Symptoms

Tomato allergy symptoms can appear immediately after eating raw tomatoes or tomato-based foods. You might notice itching, swelling of the lips or throat, or even digestive issues like nausea. In rare cases, anaphylaxis can occur, requiring immediate medical attention. As Verywell Health points out, “symptoms usually happen quickly after consuming tomatoes.” If you suspect an allergy, it’s important to avoid tomatoes and seek professional diagnosis.

Diagnosing a Tomato Allergy

Doctors diagnose tomato allergies using skin or blood tests to identify immune responses to tomato proteins. Because tomato allergies often overlap with pollen allergies, a thorough medical evaluation is essential. According to Verywell Health, “cross-reactivity with pollen can complicate diagnosis,” so seeing an allergist is key for accurate results.

Managing Tomato Allergies

The most effective way to manage a tomato allergy is to avoid raw tomatoes and products made from them. However, since tomatoes are so common in many diets, reading labels and asking about food preparation when eating out is crucial. Some people with OAS find that cooking tomatoes reduces the risk of a reaction. Verywell Health explains, “heat can break down proteins that trigger symptoms, making cooked tomatoes safer.”

Tomato Allergy and Pollen Allergies: The Link

Tomato allergies often connect with OAS, where your body confuses proteins in certain fruits for pollen. If you’re allergic to grass or birch pollen, you might react to raw tomatoes in a similar way. For some people, cooking tomatoes reduces or eliminates the symptoms.

If you think you’re allergic to tomatoes or experience any symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact a healthcare professional. For more on how to diagnose a tomato allergy, check out this link.

Switching to Fully Recyclable Inflated Tube Packaging: A Sustainable Future

Switching to Fully Recyclable Inflated Tube Packaging! At Tomato Free, we’re excited to announce a major upgrade in our commitment to sustainability. Starting tomorrow, we will be transitioning from traditional polystyrene packaging to an eco-friendly inflated tube packaging system. This change not only reduces waste but also ensures that our packaging is 100% recyclable!

Inflated tube packaging

Why We’re Making the Switch

Polystyrene has been widely used due to its durability and protective qualities. However, it’s a non-recyclable material that contributes to environmental pollution. By switching to Fully Recyclable Inflated Tube Packaging, we aim to:

  • Reduce plastic waste in landfills
  • Support a circular economy with recyclable materials
  • Provide our customers with an easy and environmentally conscious way to dispose of packaging

The Benefits of Inflated Tube Packaging

Our new inflated tube system is designed with both the environment and our customers in mind. Here’s why we believe this is a better option:

  1. 100% Recyclable: These air-filled tubes are made from recyclable materials, so they can be easily disposed of in your regular recycling bin.
  2. Lightweight and Efficient: Air-filled packaging is lightweight, which means lower shipping costs and reduced carbon emissions during transportation.
  3. Superior Protection: Despite being lighter, these inflated tubes offer exceptional cushioning, ensuring your products arrive in perfect condition.
  4. Space-Saving: Our tubes take up minimal space when deflated, allowing us to store and ship packaging more efficiently.

Join Us in Making a Difference

At Tomato Free, we believe that small changes can lead to big impacts. By adopting this eco-friendly packaging solution, we’re taking another step towards reducing our carbon footprint and promoting a greener planet.

We invite you to join us on this journey by recycling the packaging and choosing sustainable options whenever possible. Together, we can make a positive difference for the environment.

Stay tuned for more updates on our sustainability efforts, and thank you for supporting Tomato Free in our mission to replace tomatoes for allergy sufferers and help protect the planet!

We’re back!

After a MUCH longer break than expected (it was just easier with the arrival of our baby boy, and other work commitments), we are now back and better than ever! What have we been doing since 2015?

  • Improved packaging – now with polystyrene lined boxes to prevent breakages during delivery
  • Tamper-proof perforated seal
  • Clearer labelling
  • Improved recipe – Now made without celery so even more people can enjoy Ally’s tomato-free sauces!
  • Larger jar sizes (previous 285g, now 350g) for Ally’s Tomato-Free Sauce

We have also made the decision to switch from overnight courier to Royal Mail 2nd class delivery service as it is significantly more cost effective. We have spent a long time improving the recipe following customer feedback asking for a celery free version and think we have come up with the perfect combination of ingredients. We hope you love it as much as we do 🙂

More wonderful feedback!

We received this wonderful e-mail today via the contact form:

“Thank you so much for making this sauce and the recipes too. Pretty much the only vegetable my daughter was eating before we discovered her tomato allergy was baked beans! Now I can make baked beans for her and know that she’s also getting to eat other veg too. She says they taste like ‘restaurant beans’!
Her favourite pasta dish was spaghetti bolognaise so she is over the moon that this is back on her menu again!
Really hope that you will one day get this to a nationwide retail outlet so that we can save on the postage.
On a side note, for those people looking for an alternative to tomato sauce based pizza and don’t want to open a whole jar of your sauce, Asda stores with a pizza counter can make pizzas with a garlic and herb spread instead of tomato sauce. A 14″ pizza is only £3 at our store.

Thank you again.

Christina”

Thank you SO much Christina!  It’s lovely to have such great feedback and I’m really glad your daughter enjoys the sauce and the freedom to eat all her favorite foods again!  I hope you don’t mind me posting your e-mail here for everyone to see, but it is your feedback and word-of-mouth that is making Ally’s No Tomato sauce such a success!

Another great little tip for making your own pizza is to use our tomato free ketchup as the pizza sauce (you only need a few table-spoons spread over the base and it tastes superb). My girls love making their own pizzas, which usually end up looking like big smiley faces with pepperoni eyes, mushroom ears, pineapple teeth. I’ll post up some pics next time we make them, and will put some new recipes up too (we have recently discovered a fantastic meat-ball and spaghetti dish which I can’t wait to share with you!)  Please let us know if you have any other great tomato-free recipe ideas (with OR without Ally’s No Tomato Sauce), and I’ll happily share them on tomatofree.co.uk

Delays to orders.

To all our wonderful and loyal customers.  We are extremely sorry for the recent delays in deliveries.  We have had a severe technical breakdown with the server (caused by lightning strike!).  All back-orders over the last two and a half weeks have been recovered and will be processed as soon as possible.

On a lighter note, our 3rd child was born on Friday morning!  Say hi to little Sebastian 🙂 (His early arrival has also delayed the orders, so please accept our sincere apologies).
